After expressing an interest in design, Shaye, the director of the Columbia publishing course, recommended I opted into being art director for our media workshop week, I did! I hadn’t art directed before, and soon, I would learn how drastically different it was from simply being a designer. The challenge of creating the visual language for a film and television brand was a singular one, but I had so much fun learning from our design and magazine faculty all about the art of type, logo, and the importance of visual branding.

After much back and forth, our group ended up deciding on the contentious—our mentors weren’t the biggest fan, but it was what felt most true to our brand and vision for the magazine—TALKIES, which is a term from the 1920s that refers to movies made with synchronized sound and dialogue.

TALKIES covers new films to watch, genres to explore, and TV to binge. Well-versed in the canon and plugged into current conversations, TALKIES is your one-stop destination for all things film and television.
